When first hiring on I became a safety captain and within a few years was the co-chair of the union. The previous representative had been working this position for years and was looking for someone such as myself to take his place. I spent almost twelve years doing that job along with my posted job which was in shipping. I operated large clamp trucks and cranes down on the dock. I enjoyed the dock work but my real passion again was working with people. That is strange because it was a very stressful position. Working between the company and the union in any circumstances is a no win situation looking for a place to happen. After 23 years working in the mill with the last eleven in the safety program my nerves gave out and I decided to retire. Unfortunately these specific groups of workers are the major tax base for our country and seem to get all of the problems laid on them. People are struggling day by day to make a living and things are not improving. Taxes keep going up and jobs are disappearing at an incredible rate. Many very good paying jobs have suffered recently because of the threat of a Recession and companies forced into downsizing. Part of this is due to modern new methods of doing business. Today very few manual jobs exist and the ones that do are all based on minimum wages. It is not rocket science to see what is happening. Most people barely make a living these days and every moment of time is used to create enough money to feed the family. On top of all this both the Man of the House and mother now need to participate just to make ends meet. From the time I was a very young man people have believed in Religion and the overall power of God to come to the aid of mankind. This by no means is with the flick of a finger, or anything close to that concept, but a direction set to help the average man and woman survive the times. Are we all being tested at this present time? Go Figure, I am not sure, and wonder how this generation is going to stabilize and get back to the life we once knew.
